Serge Taneyev, String Quintet in G major for two violins, viola, and two cellos. Opus 14. M.P. Belaieff edition. Measures about 11" x 13". Dedicated to N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov.

All five parts are present. The wrapper is worn and mended with tape. The parts, however, were printed on durable paper and are in very nice condition. The paper is flexible and the printing is bright. There is an ink name at the upper right-hand corner of the wrapper and each part; other than that, the music is clean and free of markings.

This work was originally published in 1904. This edition looks to have been issued sometime in the early to mid 20th century.

Sergey Taneyev (1856 – 1915) was a Russian composer, pianist, teacher of composition, music theorist and author. Taneyev was one of the greatest Russian composers of the late 19th to early 20th centuries, but his fame has not spread beyond his homeland. Taneyev was a close friend and confidant of Tchaikovsky, and the two are said to have been in a romantic relationship. Taneyev's specialized field of study was counterpoint. He engrossed himself in the music of J. S. Bach, Palestrina, and other masters, eventually becoming one of the greatest of contrapuntalists.
