Pinus pinea, also known as the Italian stone pine or stone pine, is an iconic evergreen tree treasured for its distinctive umbrella-shaped crown. Native to the Mediterranean region, this pine thrives in warm climates and well-drained soils. Its bark is thick, reddish-brown, and deeply fissured, adding to its visual appeal. The Pinus pinea needles are bluish-green and grow in pairs, creating a soft texture. Mature trees produce large, woody cones that contain edible Pinus pinea seeds, also known as pine nuts. Pinus pinea is a slow-growing species, making it suitable for larger gardens or landscapes within its hardiness zone.
