Description
Antique Dorflinger “Chester” Ruby Cut-to-Clear Tankard
Gorham Sterling Silver Lid | American Brilliant Period Glass
Circa 1890–1910
Offered here is an exceptional example of American Brilliant Period (ABP) cut glass, featuring a striking ruby cut-to-clear crystal tankard mounted with its original Gorham sterling silver lid.
The glass is cut in the Dorflinger “Chester” pattern, a recognized American Brilliant design distinguished by its strawberry diamond panels with star rosette centers, brilliant fan cutting, and long vertical prism panels.
The vibrant ruby overlay flashing has been expertly cut away to reveal the clear crystal beneath, creating the dramatic brilliance and jewel-like contrast prized by collectors of American Brilliant cut glass.
Mounted with an ornate Gorham sterling silver hinged lid, the tankard represents the collaboration of two of the finest luxury crafts of the late 19th century — American cut glass and sterling silverwork.
The mount bears the classic Gorham hallmarks:
Lion – Anchor – G
STERLING
confirming manufacture by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island, one of the most prestigious American silversmiths.
The sterling collar, hinge, thumb lift, and lid appear original and period correct, which is an important factor for collectors of mounted ABP cut glass tankards.

Dorflinger Chester Pattern Cutting
This tankard displays superb Dorflinger American Brilliant cutting, including:
• Deep mitered prism cuts
• Strawberry diamond panels with rosette star centers
• Fan cutting beneath the collar
• Tall vertical prism panels
• Brilliant hobstar base
• Large faceted crystal handle
The cutting is crisp, symmetrical, and deeply executed — characteristics associated with the finest American Brilliant Period crystal.

Ruby Cut-to-Clear Overlay Crystal
Overlay crystal required a second layer of colored glass fused over a clear crystal blank before cutting, making it significantly more complex and expensive to produce.
The deep ruby flashing layer is precisely removed through cutting to expose the brilliant clear crystal beneath.
Ruby overlay examples are far less common than green overlay pieces, making them particularly desirable among collectors of ABP colored cut glass.
⸻
Gorham Sterling Mount
The ornate lid and collar are crafted from solid sterling silver and stamped with the well-known Gorham hallmark.
Gorham frequently produced luxury mounts for American Brilliant cut glass tankards, steins, and pitchers sold through fine retailers during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
The repoussé scroll border complements the geometric brilliance of the crystal beautifully.

Dimensions
Height: approximately 9¾ inches (to top of spout)
Height to rim: approximately 8½ inches
Width including handle: approximately 7¼ inches
Base diameter: approximately 4 inches
A substantial example of heavy American Brilliant cut crystal with sterling mount.
⸻
Condition
Very good antique condition.
A stable heat check is present near the handle attachment. This is a minor internal stress line created during the original glass cooling process at the factory, sometimes referred to as a cooling check.
Important notes:
• The line is not through-and-through
• It does not extend through the entire wall of the glass
• It is stable and unchanged over time
• It occurred during manufacture rather than from later damage
These types of checks are occasionally encountered on large, heavy American Brilliant cut glass pieces where cooling stresses developed during production.
Additional notes:
• No chips observed to the rim or major cutting elements
• Sterling lid retains attractive antique patina
• Lid hinge operates properly
Please review all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
