Light weight wood may be pine.  

The chain was carved from a single piece of wood (plank perhaps if done by a sailor/mariner).  

The wood was darkened to resemble iron links and hook. 

Overall length is about 80" approx.  

Links are close in size and thickness, just what you want to see.

I believe this is a seaman’s work, as planks of wood would be more readily available for that length, and the time to make it and store it would make sense, rather than a soldier on the march, or even in a post/fort setting might be less likely.

Either way, a well executed carved chain.
