Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a landscape scenery with high mountains, a thin waterfall, a river, and a bridge at the bottom of the composition. This type of kakejiku is called sansui, literally mountains and water. It is painted with black ink. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in a tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used on Buddhist altars.
