Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (called kakejiku or makimono) features a landscape with a house and people in the foreground, and mountains with trees in the background. This type of kakejiku is called sansui, literally mountains and water. It is painted in color. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. The box has inscriptions on the lid.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in a tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used on Buddhist altars.
