Antique Chinese steelyard balance scale traditionally used in markets for weighing goods. This type of handheld beam scale was widely used by merchants and traders across China for produce, grain, herbs, and other commodities.

The scale features a hardwood beam with inlaid graduation dots, a brass hanging pan with chain suspension, and a heavy bell shaped bronze counterweight.

The bronze weight bears cast Chinese characters:

十五斤

Fifteen Jin (traditional Chinese weight unit)

This indicates calibration for the traditional Chinese weight system. One jin is roughly equivalent to about half a kilogram in modern measurement.

Features

• Hardwood beam with traditional inlaid graduation dots

• Original brass weighing pan with chain suspension

• Bronze bell shaped counterweight

• Traditional Chinese steelyard design

• Approximate length: about 24 inches

Condition

Good antique condition with age related wear and natural patina from use. The wood beam is solid and the metal components show oxidation consistent with age.

One attachment point on the brass pan rim is broken (see photos). Chains are present. This is a common issue on well used scales of this type and does not affect display value.

Please review photos carefully for overall condition.
