Unframed 17th century German copper engraving on hand-laid paper, depicting the biblical scene of "Peter on the Sea” by Matthias Scheits (1625-1700); engraved by Johann Georg Waldreich (Waldtreich) (documented 1660-1680); and published by Stern'sche Druckerei, Lüneburg, printer.

Influenced by Dutch masters like Wouwerman and van Ostade, Scheits is best known for creating 152 drawings for the "Scheits'sche Bibel" printed in 1672. This etching is one of those illustrations. Matthias Scheits was a German painter and draughtsman. He studied in Hamburg and in the northern Netherlands, where he was a pupil of Philips Wouwerman. His works include familiar Dutch genre themes, soldiers at their encampment, music at home, but he also executed religious subjects, notably in 152 drawings for engravings for this illustrated Bible.

The engraving measures approximately 8.25 inches by 10.75 inches. Watermark on paper. Likely cut down from original size with top and bottom pasted from original. General age-related toning and minor foxing. Small tears to edges as shown in photos. Remnants of tape to reverse.
