Son of the battle painter Christian Wilhelm von Faber du Faur, he received his first artistic inspiration from his father. After a military career, he began studying in Munich and Paris, where he worked under Adolphe Yvon and was inspired by Delacroix. His trips to Morocco in 1883 shaped his late work, which is dominated by expressive colorism. Despite posthumous recognition, he remained largely misunderstood during his lifetime and died isolated in Munich.
