Throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries hand-carved wood cases were used to store a small, portable o***m balance scale (known as a "dotchin"), which typically included a brass pan, a bone beam, and a bronze weight. Their ease of transportation made them ideal for nearly all transactions, and remained highly sought after collectors items long after the Opiumm Wars had ended. The scales were also historically used throughout Southeast Asia and China to weigh various other substances such as precious metals like gold and medicines, with some regional variants still produced today both by hand.
