THE MASK OF THE SORCERER by DARRELL SCHWEITZER. Wildside Press, 2002. Original cover painting by STEPHEN FABIAN. This book first appeared as a British mass-market paperback (New English Library) in 1995. The first American edition appeared from the SF Book Club. This is the first American trade paperback.

Expands the World Fantasy Award finalist novella "To Become a Sorcerer" which was published in WEIRD TALES. This book was apparently short-listed for the British Fantasy Award (so I discover from various sources), though it was never announced on the ballot and so cannot be described as a runner-up. Beyond that, all humility departs. This is my best novel. The story of Sekenre, the boy sorcerer whose father (and everyone the father ever murdered, and everyone they ever murdered) lives on inside his head, much to the peril of his soul.

GENE WOLFE says: "If ever your heart has said, The great days are no more. The golden afternoon of golden tales has faded into night, and I came late, born out of time, to warm my hands at the embers that flicker and fade hour by hour -- read this ... Here are ghosts grim and gentle, red gold of Ophir, and fell weavings. Here is a tale to keep Scheherazade talking a hundred years."

TANITH LEE says: "Schweitzer is a storyteller, by whose smoky fire one may sit spell-bound."

MORGAN LLYWELLYN says: "The Mask of the Sorcerer is one of the ten best fantasy novels of the past generation."

How can I say more, except that I think you will like this book?
