This is a US military canteen from the era after the civil war and before WWI. The very unique feature is the stamp on the front "R.I.M". INDICATING THE RHODE ISLAND MILITIA.  The mounted straps are made to attach to a saddle and they are stamped "R.I.A" 1904 which would indicate the straps were made at the Rock Island arsenal in Illinois.
