BEAUTIFUL, VINTAGE, RED FIGURED SILK WITH WHITE SILKY COLLAR - JAPANESE, JUBAN UNDER KIMONO with LOVELY DAMASK WOVEN CRANE BIRDS & PINE BRANCHES,- Mid to Late Showa Period 1940s -1970s - NEAR MINT/EXCELLENT VINTAGE CONDITION.

It is getting very difficult to find this sort of kimono in excellent condition like this one. So please consider this item.

This is an authentic vintage Japanese, lined, juban under-kimono. This type of juban would probably have been worn under a formal kimono.

The outer fabric of this juban is lightweight, high end, mon kinsha silk. This is a special soft, lustrous, silk characterised by being lustrous soft and figured, so it has a woven design.

The colour is bright red.

This silk is woven all over with a typical Japanese motifs . There are flying cranes 'tsuru' an iconic Japanese motif which sybolizes joy, long life and fidelity and if often shown on wedding attire. The second motif shows pine branches which are symbolic of long life and resilience.

The woven pattern is difficult to show clearly on the photos but it catches the light nicely and is evident to the eye.

The red colour is considered a popular wedding colour as it is supposed to promote health but it is also characteristic of a juban of the era.

The lining in the sleeves, is the same fabric as the outside. The lining in the body is  fine, red cotton.

It is quite normal to have white or patterned collars stitched on a juban over the basic collar, as it is only the collar that really shows when worn under a kimono. And this is the case here. There is a warm white silky secondary collar just tacked over the under collar which is typically made of ivory-white calico cotton. I think it will be fairly recently applied because it is pristine.

Juban are important garments because they are worn under all kimono to protect the kimono from sweat etc. The only part of the juban that is seen is the collar. The collars are often white but can be any colour and style that is complementary to the outer kimono.

Juban kimonos do not come with a matching belt. Traditionally they are worn with a simple tie belt called 'koshi himo' which would be bought separately.
On this occasion, I have supplied a traditional, Japanese, silk obijime cord to use as a simple tie belt so the juban can be used to make the juban into a dressing gown or robe. The obijime is made of thick flat, warm white cord with gold detailing and with tasseled ends.

OBIJIME -The obijime is a traditional kimono accessory. It is a long cord that is used to tie round the centre of the obi to keep everything in place and finish it off. Obijime normally sell for over £10+ on their own, so this is a good bonus.

AGE & CONDITION: Red silk juban are characteristic of the 1920s-1940s. and I believe this one may originally date from this period but may have been remodelled in recent years. The reasons I say this are that the size and cotton lining tends to suggest an early date of around the 1930s, a period between the two world wars when silk was in short supply. However the length of the sleeve drop and the very clean secondary collar suggest a more recent date.

The kimono is in near mint/excellent vintage condition overall with no conspicuous faults to note at all which is rare to find. This is a vintage garment of some considerable age, in overall great condition but please do not expect it to be like new.

SIZE: This juban is a bit larger in body size but a littler shorter than average for this kind of kimono and date.
It should fit a range of sizes up to a maximum of UK12. It should also fit people a bit smaller too, as it is a wrap over style.

The overall length is about 49inches/124.5cm.
The cuff to cuff width is 48.5 inches/123cm.
The width across the back (side seam to side seam) 61cm /24inches. The width all around at the waist, from the front of one side, all the way round the back to the front of the other side, is about 51"/130cm and please remember you need an overlap in the front.
The weighs is light weight at about 400g.
The belt is about 65"/165cm long

CLEANING: Vintage silk items should not be washed. They can usually be dry cleaned. Old stains are not usually removable and some finishes like gold paint may be diminished by dry cleaning.

All information is to the best of my knowledge. Please bear in mind, that colours do not always show absolutely accurately on photos and on monitors although they should be close to reality.

My items are mostly vintage and are not returnable unless grossly mis-described, so please check the details and measurements before bidding/buying. Please be aware that vintage clothing does not usually 'look like new' even when it is in excellent condition. Some slight general signs of ageing and use should be expected. If these are conspicuous, they will be mentioned in the description.
