What is Furisode Kimono?
Furisode kimono is a kimono with long sleeves and richly patterned designs, and is worn as the first formal dress for young unmarried women in Japan. It is worn for coming-of-age ceremonies, weddings, graduation ceremonies, and presentations.
The origin of furisode comes from the way the long sleeves flutter and sway when the wearer shakes them. In addition, the ancient Japanese gesture of “waving” has a meaning of purifying and warding off evil spirits, and wearing furisode at the coming-of-age ceremony is also meant to purify the body.
There are different types of furisode, including large, medium, and small furisode, and the length of the sleeves depends on the height of the wearer. The longer the sleeve, the more prestigious it is.
