Parafernalia Revolution Ballpoint Pen Designed by Sergio Carpani

The Revolution ballpoint pen is an undisputed icon of Italian design. Created in 1978 by architect and designer Sergio Carpani as a tribute to the construction of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, also known as Beaubourg, the pen directly reflects the building’s groundbreaking architectural approach. The Pompidou Center became famous for placing its entire structural skeleton on the outside. Pipes, beams, ducts, and mechanical systems were fully exposed, transforming functional engineering into visible art.

Carpani applied this same idea to the Revolution. The pen’s three anodized aluminum rods mirror the Pompidou’s exposed framework, and its open construction allows the internal mechanism to remain visible. Nothing is concealed, and every structural element becomes part of the design. This is the core of the concept. The pen is not simply inspired by the building. It is a deliberate translation of Pompidou’s architectural philosophy into a writing instrument.

This is why the Revolution still looks modern decades later. It was created to express a new way of thinking about structure and design, not to follow trends. Its form is rooted in a moment of architectural innovation, which gives it a timeless, unmistakable presence.

Each Revolution pen is built from 31 individual components, all produced in Italy and assembled entirely by hand. Three anodized aluminum rods form the body, joined by precision machined connectors and finished with a minimalist ABS tip. The clip is intentionally delicate and stylistic, designed to complement the pen’s sculptural form rather than serve as a heavy duty functional clip. The result is a writing instrument that feels both industrial and artistic, with a lightweight ergonomic form that is comfortable in daily use.

The Revolution series was offered in twelve colors.
