St. Nicholas Day is a beloved winter holiday cherished by both children and adults, associated with the magic of dreams coming true, kind deeds, and sweet surprises.
Traditionally, on the eve of the holiday, children write heartfelt letters to St. Nicholas, sharing their good deeds and wishes—often asking for toys or sweets. For children, St. Nicholas is a true miracle worker who inspires kindness and encourages them to dream of things that truly matter. On the morning of December 6, well-behaved children discover gifts beneath their pillows and believe they were delivered by the saint himself.
But the war in Ukraine has deeply altered the lives—and dreams—of millions, especially children. In their letters to St. Nicholas now, Ukrainian children express painful truths and heartfelt hopes. Instead of toys, they ask for “superpowers for the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” “level 1000 armor,” “a stockpile of weapons,” “a warm winter” for Ukrainian soldiers, and above all, “for everyone to come back alive.”
The inspiration for this postal issue came from a real letter written by a young Ukrainian boy named Ihor to St. Nicholas. His letter, full of sincerity and hope, is reproduced in its original form on the envelope—serving as a poignant reminder of the resilience and spirit of Ukraine’s youngest dreamers.
