Real photo postcard showing the memorial at the historic Reno-Benteen Battlefield in Big Horn County, Montana.
The Reno-Benteen Battlefield preserves the site where Major Marcus Reno and Captain Frederick Benteen led a defensive stand following the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25-26, 1876.
After Custer divided his regiment into three battalions, Reno's force was the first to engage the Lakota and Cheyenne warriors, charging toward Sitting Bull's village before being overwhelmed and forced to retreat to defensive positions on the bluffs.
Benteen's companies joined them there, and together they withstood a prolonged siege while Custer's five companies met their fate at Last Stand Hill.
The monument commemorates the soldiers of Companies A, D, F, G, H, I, and M who survived the two-day battle. While Custer's Last Stand claimed 261 lives, the Reno-Benteen entrenchment allowed 350 members of the 7th Cavalry to survive until relief arrived.
The site features white marble headstones marking where individual soldiers fell during the fighting.
