The first seven Saw films center on the Jigsaw Killer, John Kramer, and his apprentices, who force victims to undergo deadly "tests" or "games" to test their will to live. The films frequently use nonlinear storytelling, flashbacks, and shocking twists to connect the narratives.
- Saw (2004): Two strangers, Dr. Lawrence Gordon and photographer Adam Stanheight, wake up chained in a dilapidated bathroom with a dead body between them. They must follow cryptic instructions to escape before Dr. Gordon's family is killed. The film establishes Jigsaw's philosophy and ends with the reveal that the "dead body" is John Kramer himself, who traps Adam in the room.
- Saw II (2005): The police capture John Kramer, who is terminally ill with cancer. He monitors a house where eight people, including Detective Eric Matthews' son, are trapped and dying from a lethal nerve agent. Matthews must play Jigsaw's game to save his son. The twist reveals that the events in the house are pre-recorded tapes and that the detective's son has been locked in a safe the entire time. Jigsaw's apprentice is revealed to be Amanda Young, a previous survivor.
- Saw III (2006): A bedridden and dying John Kramer has Amanda kidnap surgeon Dr. Lynn Denlon and force her to keep him alive. Simultaneously, a grieving father named Jeff must navigate a series of traps designed to test his capacity for forgiveness toward the people involved in his son's death. The film ends with Jigsaw, Amanda, Lynn, and Jeff all dying in a tragic confluence of events, as Jigsaw's final game unfolds.
- Saw IV (2007): Occurring concurrently with Saw III, this film opens with John Kramer's autopsy and follows SWAT Lieutenant Daniel Rigg, who is forced into a game to save missing colleagues Eric Matthews and Mark Hoffman. Through extensive flashbacks, we learn Jigsaw's backstory, including his wife's miscarriage and diagnosis. The twist reveals that Detective Hoffman is Jigsaw's other apprentice and orchestrated Rigg's game.
- Saw V (2008): Following Jigsaw's death, Detective Hoffman takes over the legacy, while FBI Agent Peter Strahm investigates and becomes convinced Hoffman is the new Jigsaw killer. A separate group of five people, connected by their involvement in a past building fire, must work together to survive a series of traps, though their selfishness leads to their deaths. Hoffman frames Strahm and eventually traps him in a room to die.
- Saw VI (2009): The film focuses on an insurance executive, William Easton, who previously denied coverage for John Kramer's experimental cancer treatment, leading to John's death sentence. William is put through a game where he must save family members while facing his past decisions. Meanwhile, Hoffman faces challenges from Jigsaw's ex-wife, Jill Tuck, who is entrusted with carrying out John's final test on Hoffman.
- Saw 3D (a.k.a. Saw: The Final Chapter) (2010): A man named Bobby Dagen, who falsely claimed to be a Jigsaw survivor for fame and profit, is put into a real game to save his wife. Jill Tuck informs internal affairs that Hoffman is the Jigsaw killer, leading to a police hunt. The film culminates in Hoffman killing Jill and being captured by Dr. Lawrence Gordon (the survivor from the first film), who became a secret apprentice of John Kramer and locks Hoffman in the original bathroom to die.
