In Africa, snuff has been carried in small containers made from a gourd or fruit shell since tobacco was introduced in the 16th Century. Used in social situations, snuff was usually carried in a small container, such as this gourd which is missing its wooden stopper.


This style of decoration is associated with southern Africa and was made by several ethnic groups including Zulu people.
