"Grapevine" is back, though it's doubtful most viewers realize it was gone in the first place. This imaginative comedy, created by David Frankel about the single life in Miami Beach, drew critical praise but low ratings during a brief late-summer run in 1992.
Frankel centered a fast-talking half-hour around David, a glib restaurant owner; Thumper, David's not-so-bright sportscaster brother; and Susan, a voluptuous cruise-line executive. These three would spin a seductive tale, wound through enough twists to involve everyone from ex-girlfriend to delivery boy. Each character would individually address the audience in rat-a-tat fashion, sharing the story with surprising results
The first "Grapevine" was a poor fit with the stodgier CBS of eight years ago. This in-carnation, with its initial six-episode order again written and directed by Frankel, is a bit softer than the zingy original.
Last week's pilot lost steam when Platonic palsĀ® David (Steven Eckholdt, interviewed on page 37) and Susan (Kristy Swanson), after dancing delightfully through several mis-matches, acknowledged love for each other.
Monday's episode recaptures some of that old feeling when Thumper (George Eads, who oozes talking TV head) makes a play for the ex-wife of recently divorced Matt (newcomer David Sutcliffe), leading to an atypical comedy of eros. Even at a notch below its saucy ancestor, the fruit of the new "Grapevine" is something to savor.
