Upgrading to 550k pots with a 5% tolerance in your Gibson Les Paul provides two primary benefits: a guarantee of reaching at least the 500k resistance threshold for a brighter tone and significantly improved consistency across all four controls. 

• Guaranteed Brightness: Standard 500k pots often have a 20% tolerance, meaning they can measure as low as 400k. A 400k pot will make humbuckers sound darker or "muddy". Using 550k pots ensures that even at the bottom of a 10% or 5% tolerance window, you are still at or above 500k, preserving the high-end clarity of your pickups.
• Tight Tolerance (±5%): High-quality pots like those from CTS with a 5% tolerance mean your pots will measure between 522.5k and 577.5k. This precision ensures that your bridge and neck pickups respond predictably and that your volume/tone sweeps feel identical across all four knobs.
• Tone Loading: Potentiometers act as a load on your pickups even when turned to 10. Higher resistance (550k vs. 500k or the stock 300k found in some Gibsons) reduces the amount of high-frequency signal bled to ground, resulting in a more "open" and harmonically rich sound.
