Antique pewter sauceboat, circa 1750. The sauceboat has an elongated, oval form that resembles a boat. The top edge of the boat has a scalloped design supported by a short, flared, and ribbed pedestal base. There is a single, ornate, curved handle. It is marked on reverse with a partial makers mark.
The maker’s touch mark is a Crowned Tudor Rose, with the crown bearing the initials V on the left and T on the right. Often a Crowned Rose touch mark would indicate English or London made. According to Christopher A. Peal, in his book British Pewter, “. . . in the early part of the seventeenth-century . . . Rose and Crown was used as a touch in the Low Countries where, often, petals of the rose were filled with fine radial lines, and/or the crown contained, within its outline, the makers’ initials.” If you look closely, you can see the radial lines on the rose of this touch mark. My research has found other instances where this particular mark has been used on items dated to the early and mid 18th century. I have not, however, been able to specifically identify the maker or country of origin.
The sauceboat measures approximately 3.25 inches tall, 10 inches between spit and handle, and a 3 inch by 2.25 inch foot. It weighs approximately 489 grams or 1.1 pounds. Wear appropriate for age to the inside of the bowl as visible in photos.
