Dodge Main was founded by the Dodge brothers and began operation in 1910. The factory's production history spanned seven decades, with the plant making parts for Ford before building complete Dodge vehicles.The factory transformed the village of Hamtramck from a small town into a major industrial city. At its peak in the 1940s, Dodge Main was one of America's largest automotive factories, employing up to 36,000 workers and producing roughly 1,200 cars a day.
The plant was deemed obsolete and permanently closed in January 1980 by Chrysler who had acquired it in 1928.
