The 1991 Topps Desert Shield baseball cards are a unique and highly sought after.
The was packs were designed for only US military personnel
stationed in the Middle East during Operation Desert Shield. The 1991 Topps
cards have the distinctive gold foil “Desert Shield” stamped on card.
It is estimated that only
about 6,500 to 7,000 of each player were printed.
This set was obtained for my private collection since I had a
son in the Desert Shield (Desert Strom) war. The cards are NM except for a couple
which will be noted in description. The cards are being sold since I am
battling cancer and do not have the time to get them graded. These cards are a simple
“rarity”.

"GRADING"
When
grading cards - we are critical of the "eye appeal" factor as well as
the four "C's" --
Corners,
Clarity, Condition and Centering
All
of our cards are graded no higher than Near Mint - Mint (NMMT-MT)
GEM-MT
(GM-MT)
Reserved
only for the cards that are near perfect, this term refers to Gem Mint. A
card in this category should have no staining, little to no imperfection in
printing, four corners that are still sharp, and the original surface gloss.
The centering of the card should be approximately 60/40 or less. Very, very few
cards fit this category, like cards right of the wrapper.
MINT (MT)
Mint
condition cards should have sharp corners and little to no damage. In fact, the
Mint card should have only one minor flaw. The minor flaws category can include
a slightly off-center border (no more than 60/40), and small printing issue on
back. Right out of wrapper with a slight flaw.
NEAR
MINT-MINT (NRMT-MT)
Near Mint
condition cards should have sharp corners and little to no damage. These
cards would be mint if not for the centering of 65/35.
NEAR MINT
(NM)
Near mint
cards will still be considered of high quality. When they are first looked at,
they may appear to be mint. Corners are excellent with clear picture, but they
may have one slight flaw. The flaws that are allowed in this category include a
small print spot, a slight rough edge, one corner that is slightly frayed
(corners should still have an edge and not rounding) and centering of 65/35.
EXCELLENT
PLUS NEAR MINT (EX+NM)
Excellent
Near Mint cards will still be considered high quality but has a noticeable
flaw. The flaws in this category consist of slight one to two fuzzy corners,
slight rough edge, noticeable print spot. These flaws should not affect the
quality of the picture. The is 70/30 or better.
EXCELLENT
NEAR MINT (EXNM)
Excellent
Near Mint cards can have a couple blemishes or slight damage issue that is
noticeable at first glance. The centering should fall in the range of 70/30.
The picture should be sharp and focused.
EXCELLENT
PLUS (EX+)
Excellent
Plus cards refer to cards that have enough visible damage that they will be
recognized as such. This could include such surface damage as light scratches,
light corner fraying and light stains. The quality of the picture is excellent.
The centering should be around 75/25. This card is probably the best deal for
the money of all grades.
EXCELLENT
(EX)
Excellent
cards are solid mid-grade card where damage will become more evident. Corners
may be rounded slightly. Printing issues may be more obvious. Light scratches
and very light creasing may be evident. The centering should be 80/20 or above.
VERY GOOD
- EXCELLENT (VG-EX)
The
nicest of the low-grade cards. Very Good Excellent would refer to
cards with damage that is noticeable. This could include scratching, chipping,
and staining as well as damage to the glossy surface, and rounded corners. The
card cannot be miss-cut and no major creases or intentional damage. The overall
look of the card should still be appealing. The centering should 85/15 or
above.
VERY GOOD
(VG)
Very Good
cards can have any number of damage issues that do not detract from the
overall look of the image on the card. Still has eye-appeal. These issues can
include scratches and staining, noticeable creasing, rounded corners, and
yellowed corners. The centering could be around 90/10. The card can be miss-cut
if otherwise nice.
GOOD (GD)
Good is
the lowest category of card grading that offers a still attractive image. These
cards could have a number of damage issues like rounded corners, staining,
scratching, and loss of gloss. The centering should be around 90/10 and the
overall image should still be attractive.
FAIR to
POOR (FR-PR)
Fair to
Poor cards is the final grading category. In this category, the cards will have
enough damage that it truly affects the overall look. This could include out of
register images, torn cards, creased cards, severely chipped cards and cards
with severe corner rounding. Cards that are missing pieces or have major
creasing issues would fall into this category.
