TIMES SQUARE BILLBOARDS AT DUSK 1982 Gelatin Silver Photograph

This original 5 x 7 black and white photograph was taken and developed in 1982 by New York City photographer Thomas Alan Schmidler. The image captures the glowing façade of Times Square at twilight — layered billboards advertising “TRUE STORY” and “BEST SELLER,” framed by the Paramount and Carter Hotels rising above.

Schmidler’s composition reflects the visual chaos and cinematic energy of early 1980s Manhattan, where advertising and architecture merge in electric rhythm. Printed on glossy photographic paper during his Spring 1982 darkroom session, this genuine gelatin silver print conveys the nocturnal pulse of New York’s most iconic intersection.

This is an original 1982 photograph taken and developed by my dad, Thomas Alan Schmidler in his darkroom.
