Razorback Stadium opened in 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project with an original capacity of 13,500 spectators. The stadium's natural amphitheater setting had been identified as an ideal location as far back as 1925. After years of fundraising during the Depression, WPA funding made construction possible.
The first Razorback game occurred on September 24, 1938, with Arkansas defeating Oklahoma A&M 27-7. The facility was formally dedicated two weeks later.
The 1950s and early 1960s saw Fayetteville transform from a regional college town into a growing metropolis.
