Built in 1868 by Robert Graves, superintendent of the Empire Mine, The Castle remains one of the finest mansions of the American West. Graves, who came from a prominent London publishing family, designed this home to bring a sense of luxury and civilization to the rugged mining town.
The interior features original furnishings including black walnut finishes and silver doorknobs, reflecting the immense wealth generated from the Comstock Lode. After Graves, the home was purchased in 1872 by the president of the Gold Hill Bank, Mr. Blauvelt, before passing to the McGuirk family in 1916.
Virginia City became one of the wealthiest cities in America during the 1870s, with the Comstock Lode producing over $600 million in silver and gold in today's money. This wealth helped finance the Union during the Civil War and contributed significantly to building San Francisco.
The famous writer Samuel Clemens first used his pen name "Mark Twain" while working at Virginia City's Territorial Enterprise newspaper in 1863, marking a pivotal moment in American literary history. Today, the town celebrates this connection with annual Mark Twain Days festivals.
While the popular TV series "Bonanza" helped put Virginia City on the tourism map in the 1960s, the show was primarily filmed at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, not in Nevada. Nevertheless, the show's popularity significantly boosted tourism to the area.
Today, The Castle remains privately owned and is not currently open for public tours, though visitors can still admire its impressive exterior from B Street.
