The Alamo began as Mission San Antonio de Valero, founded May 1, 1718 by Father Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares. The mission was relocated to its current downtown location in 1724 after a hurricane destroyed the previous site.

The site gained its famous name around 1803 when Spanish cavalry from San Carlos de Alamo de Parras occupied the former mission as a fortress. The Battle of the Alamo occurred March 6, 1836 during the Texas Revolution, where approximately 189 defenders including Davy Crockett, James Bowie, and William B. Travis made their legendary last stand.

The Rolling Stones famously posed for a group portrait at the Alamo on May 31, 1975, with Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, and Charlie Watts. Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash paused before the Alamo on April 9, 1982. The site has appeared in films including John Wayne's epic "The Alamo" (1960), "Selena" (1997) with Jennifer Lopez, and "Miss Congeniality" (2000) with Sandra Bullock.
