Tappahannock began as a Rappahannock Indian village known as Hobbs His Hole and later New Plymouth before reverting to its Native American name meaning “town on the rise and fall of water” which reflects its riverine heritage.

While the first Downing Bridge opened at this crossing in 1927 as a low swing span, this high-level concrete replacement connects the Northern Neck with inland Virginia and eliminated ferry service that had served the town for centuries.

Visitors to Tappahannock will recognize this crossing as the vital link that transformed regional travel, replacing steamboat and ferry routes that once defined life along the river.

Today the same concrete piers support US-360 traffic, marking continuity from colonial port town to modern highway artery.
