Camshaft Timing Tools Kit

Fitment:

All years of Detroit Diesel DD15 & DD16, EPA07 & EPA10.

*TDC locating crankshaft timing pin can be used on DD13 Engines*

DD15 Camshaft Timing Verification - Check as follows:

1. Remove the valve cover.

2. Bar the engine to TDC #1 with the #6 valve in overlap.

3. Locate the mark on the camshaft and mark the top of the corresponding tool with a light colored paint pen.

4. Remove the Crankshaft Position Sensor from the flywheel housing.

5. Install the TDC locating pin (W470589001500) through the Crankshaft Position Sensor hole in the flywheel housing and engage into the flywheel notch.

6. Install the rear timing plate (1) (W470589054000) onto the cam housing.

7. Install the front timing tool (2) (W470589054000) into the grooves cut into the cams and pin it into the cam housing. Once it is in place, install a bolt into the tool to hold it in place.

8. Verify that the marks on the gear match the marks on the timing plates.

A: If the marks match, the cam timing is not the cause of excessive white smoke.

B: the marks do not match, research the root cause of incorrect cam timing.

Engine Barring Tool

Install the engine barring tool as follows:‪
  1. Remove the two bolts holding the inspection cover to the flywheel housing.
  2. Remove the pin from the engine barring tool.
  3. Install the tool in the flywheel housing and secure with two bolts of sufficient length. (Note: The inspection cover bolts are not long enough to install the engine barring tool. Longer ones will be needed.)
  4. As needed, insert the pin to lock the tool and block movement of the flywheel ring gear.
Remove the engine barring tool as follows:
  1. Remove the two bolts and the barring tool from the flywheel housing. It is not necessary to remove the pin.
  2. Install the inspection cover on the flywheel housing with the two bolts. Tighten the bolts 25 N·m (18 lb·ft).
The engine barring tool must be removed from the timing case before starting the engine. Failure to do so could damage the flywheel ring gear.‪

Function:

  • It is designed to adjust the engine for correct position.
  • Used with 1/2" drive wrench.
  • This tool is used to bar the engine over for service procedures, installs to engage the flywheel teeth and rotate the engine using standard square drive hand tools.

The engine barring tool is used for two separate functions: locking the flywheel and rotating the crankshaft.‪

  • With the pin inserted, the tool locks the flywheel ring gear to prevent rotation during removal and installation of the flywheel.
  • Without the pin, the tool can be used with a wrench to turn the flywheel and crankshaft manually.
  • Note: The first time an engine barring tool is installed on the engine to turn the flywheel, the teeth on the rotating gear may rub on the flywheel housing. This does not cause a problem and should not occur the next time the tool is used.
Package Included:

1x TDC Locating Pin
1x Engine Barring Tool
