This original 5 x 7 inch black and white photograph was taken and developed by Thomas Schmidler in New York City in 1980. The scene captures pedestrians crossing a wet street under umbrellas, their reflections glimmering on the rain-soaked pavement. In the foreground, two open trash bins add a gritty urban texture, while the contrast between the figures in motion and the stillness of the environment highlights the rhythms of city life on a rainy day.

Thomas Schmidler (1933–1991), a fine-art photographer and printmaker, developed all of his work by hand in his own darkroom. His photography often juxtaposes everyday human activity with the stark physical presence of the city, creating moody and layered compositions. This genuine vintage gelatin silver print is both an artistic study of light and atmosphere and a vivid document of New York in 1980.
