St Ignace is historically significant as the site where Father Jacques Marquette first landed to establish his mission among the Chippewa and Ottawa tribes. The area served as a vital fur trade hub and center of Native American population in Upper Michigan.

This "Indian Village" attraction offered thousands of handcrafted articles made by descendants of these tribes, reflecting the region’s enduring Anishinaabe heritage.

Today, the original mission grounds host the Museum of Ojibwa Culture at Marquette Mission Park, where visitors can explore Ojibwa traditions and purchase authentic Native arts and crafts, preserving the living legacy of the area.
