Site of Zealots' last stand -- Aerial view made after completion of archaeological excavations shows the ruins of King Herod's palace on the northern end of Masada, the ancient rock fortress on the Dead Sea. It was here that a besieged band of Jewish patriots took their own lives, according to an ancient historian, rather than fall prisoners to the Romans.
