Antique sterling silver shield fob on a single sized curb link chain. The fob consists of an uninscribed raised cartouche in the shape of a shield with rippled ribbon underneath, elegantly framed by intricate pierced scrollwork enhanced by bright cut work.
The fob measures approximately 2 inches long (including bail) by 1 3/8 inches wide. The fob bears the silver hallmark for Birmingham as well as the maker's mark 'W.W.C" for William Walter Cashmore. The date letter is obscured, but the piece is likely late 19th century. These silver medal-like fobs were usually worn on watch chains and were also used as awards for sporting and academic achievement. This fob has a vacant cartouche, suitable for you to engrave your initials or other details if wished.
The watch chain is unmarked, but acid tests as silver. Likely 800. The watch chain measures approximately 23 inches long. The chain and fob together weigh approximately 1.25 ounces or 36 grams.
