1855 UNITED KINGDOM FRENCH OTTOMAN EMPIRE TURKISH SARDINIAN LA CRIMEA SILVER MEDAL
Silver, circular campaign medal designed by James Robertson (1813-1888), with on the obverse, the Ottoman Sultan's monogram and the Muslim calendar year of 1271. On the reverse, a trophy of arms with colours, a cannon, anchor and a mortar, the flags of the allies, and a campaign honour, 'Crimea 1855', in the exergue ('La Crimea 1855', for this Sardinian issue). The medal is suspended on a crimson ribbon with green edges.
This is the Sardinian type. Obverse: a field gun with a map of the Crimea upon it, a mortar, anchor,etc, and the four flags of the Allies behind. Exergue: "LA CRIMEA 1855". Reverse: The Sultan's cypher and inscription within a laurel wreath tied with a bow. Inscription: "Crimea 1271" (Arabic date). Awarded by the Turkish Government to selected officers and men. Inscription on edge looks like Arabic.
