Founder Usaburo Okamoto began producing kokeshi dolls in 1950, after working in crafts using artificial stone and metal. In addition to the traditional brush-painted designs of the time, he pioneered expressive techniques such as carving and pyrography, creating the signature style that continues today.
Devoted to preventing cracks in the wood, he succeeded in using materials previously considered unsuitable for kokeshi, such as the beautifully grained zelkova. His representative work, Kantsubaki (Camellia in Winter), featuring his favorite camellia flowers, was honored with purchase by Emperor Showa.
