The Art of Paining;

By C. A. Du Fresnoy; With Remarks. Translated into English with an original Preface, containing a parallel between Paitingin and Poetry.

 Early English edition [first printed in 1695] of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy's narrative poem, which provides his observations on the art of painting. Originally published in Latin. 'De Art Graphica' was written during du Fresnoy's Italian sojourn and is regarded as a critical treatise on the practice of the art, with general advice to students. This is a prose translation of the poem, by John Dryden.

Bound in an early 19th century half calf binding, the calf spine possibly earlier with modern Morocco title label in gilt. 8vo, measuring; 18.2cm x 12.3cm. Separate title page to the 2nd part "A short account of the most eminent painters" Richard Graham, the third edition. 1750. With engraved frontispiece. Pagination; [16], lxvi, [5], 237, [3], 241-397, [7]pp.**

 

Condition: See photos as part of condition report: Bound in a later half calf binding [early 19th?], spine possibly earlier, with modern Morocco title label to the spine. Binding holding firmly, the spine rebacked. Some rubbing to the extremities, paper torn to the inner joint, Text block firm, all text and frontispiece present. occasional ink marginalia, scattered foxing and spotting.
