A large early Spode blue and white transfer printed Pearlware meat plate with impressed grooves and well for juices in an hour glass pattern. The pattern is “Girl at the Well” and shows a woman in 18th century clothing filling a handled jug while distracted by something over her left shoulder. Possibly the exotic foliage or church spire in the distance? The rim has a lush foliate border of exotic flowers and a gadroon edge. Circa 1820.
The platter measures approximately 16.25 inches by 13 inches and sits 2.75 inches from the table. Marked on reverse with impressed “16” mark. It weighs over 5 pounds. It does not have a Spode makers mark, but this is a well established Spode pattern and consistent with other marked pieces in this pattern. It has extensive crazing to glaze, and areas where the glaze has chipped or did not completely adhere when fired, as shown in photos. There are also two cracks near the well, most visible from the underside, but otherwise no chips, cracks or obvious restoration.
The item(s) are antique and sold as is/as found unless otherwise noted. Because they are old, they were used and will not look new or new-like. They likely show wear, fading, scratches, chips, cracks, past repair/restoration, original imperfections and/or damage from normal use. Significant issues are shown in photos. Examine photos carefully as they are part of the description. Imperfections were factored into pricing. No returns or refunds.
