Captain Beefheart was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist. Conducting a rotating ensemble known as The Magic Band, he recorded 13 studio albums between 1967 and 1982. His music blended elements of blues, free jazz, rock, and avant-garde composition with idiosyncratic rhythms, poetry, wordplay, and Vliet’s signature gravelly singing voice with a wide vocal range. He sustained a cult following as an influence on an array of experimental rock and punk-era artists. He began performing in 1964, when he joined the original Magic Band line-up. The group's 1969 album Trout Mask Replica is considered by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the greatest albums of all time. Some other great albums include Safe As Milk, Lick My Decals Off Baby, Shiny Beast, Doc at the Radar Station, and Ice Cream for Crow. By 1982, he was focusing more on his career in art, with his paintings and drawings receiving critical acclaim and featured exhibitions in art galleries and museums across the world.  Lester Bangs cited Beefheart as "one of the four or five unqualified geniuses to rise from the hothouses of American music in the Sixties." Artists who have cited Beefheart as an influence include John Cale, The Minutemen, Tom Waits, The Sex Pistols, Z'EV, The Residents, The Clash, Throbbing Gristle, Sonic Youth, Gang of Four, Devo, Mark E. Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Pixies, White Stripes, PJ Harvey, and others.
