Charming Nursery plate in black Transferware with color enamel over glaze, circa 1840. Plate has a rim with a molded alphabet border and a Vitruvian scroll edge. Below the rim are printed two maxims: "If You Would Know The Value Of Money Rey To Borrow Some and “Creditors Have Better Memories Than Debtors.”

This maxim was taken from the writing of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), philosopher, scientist, publisher and polymath, and architect of American independence. The maxims surround a central image of two figures placed in an interior scene.

This type of plate was commonly used in the 19th century as both a decorative item and an educational tool for children, often given as gifts on special occasions. The inscription serves as a moral lesson, reflecting the values of the time.

Plate measures approximately 6 inches in diameter. No chips, cracks or signs of restoration.
