The 6th US Cavalry was a notable Civil War combat unit and fought the Comanches and  Kiowa,  patrolling the Texas Frontier as far west as Palo Duro Canyon.      

       Buffalo Springs north of Jacksboro, Texas served as a watering hole for Buffalo Hunter camps , as a Confederate Camp during the Civil War and the site of the Battle of Buffalo Springs, July 21, 1867 when 2 companies of the 6th Cavalry were besieged by 300 Comanches. It was also the site of a fight between Texas Rangers and the Comanches.

      An Original 6th US Cavalry Return for Company A  filled in at Buffalo Springs, Texas May 31, 1867 ,just 2 months before the Battle of Buffalo Springs, nk signed by Captain Benjamin Tucker Hutchins as Company Commander naming men absent, serving at various posts on Special Duty at Waco Texas, etc.  The Return and also enumerates the number of unserviceble horse.

     Comes w service info.Captain Hutchins who rose to command from the ranks during the Civil War, and after capture and parole in Virginia remained in the Army, ending his service with rank of Brevet Major. After the War he became an Episcopal Priest, serving until his death.
