1944 Press Photo Movie chimpanzee "Joe" stricken with paralysis, California

This is an original press photo. Paralysis hits movie monkey -- Los Angeles, Cal. - Joe, 8-year-old chimpanzee who has been starring recently in the Technicolor "Cobra Woman" was suddenly stricken with a paralysis a few weeks ago, just before he was scheduled to work in a new "Tarzan" picture. Reuben Castang, his British born owner and trainer who has handled animals for over 50 years is baffled by illness as no injury had been incurred by the animal, had Joe worked over with galvanic treatments and by chiropractors, but to no avail. Presently the animal is given concentrated wheat germ oil and massage treatment as applied here by Reuben Castang, with neighborhood children who used to play with Joe looking on.
