Tiffen Black Pro-Mist
It is easy to see why the Black Pro-Mists have been such a success for over the past 30 or so years. Its unique layering of contrast combined with a gauzy paint like halation, function as a twist on the stand of the pro halation spill effect. Even at its lowest density, it delivers an effective and increase in the halation which adds a pleasing depth of warmth, but is not transported to the skin tone values. These characteristics will become more apparent when you use densities of 1 quarter and above.
In the heavier densities the spill is quite aggressive from the practical light, with the warm tone becoming more apparent. Yet the subtle but effective look still continues to make the pro mist filter a staple filter for many cinematographers in the digital world.

The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Black Pro-Mist 1/8, 1/4 & 1/2 Filters
helps to reduce the value of the highlights while slightly lowering the
overall contrast. This filter is especially useful for smoothing out
and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes. While designed for
use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty
applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter,
Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. The 1/8
density provides a very small amount of contrast and highlight
reduction and allows for a soft, pastel-like quality of light.
Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that
involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical
glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This
filter measures 4 x 5.65" / 101.6 x 143.5mm.

Tiffen Optical Filters
Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore
technology, a closely guarded proprietary process that entails permanently
laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are
ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in
precision metal rings. The ColorCore process allows us to control the color and
density of Tiffen filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters
with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually
exhibit color and density .
When Tiffen filters are ground and polished, the Colorcore
is unaffected, so color and density remain uniform. Indeed, when you hold a
group of Tiffen filters of the same type against a white sheet of paper, they

To protect your filters and keep them in great working

recommend making sure to keep the filters stored in a dark, cool, and dry place
when not in use. The use of filter pouches or specialized cases will also keep

environment, the addition of fresh silica gel packs or a dehumidifier in the
room they are stored is also highly recommended. Protecting your filters as you
