USS Columbia: this 413 foot cruiser was built in Philadelphia and commissioned April 23, 1894.  She joined the US Atlantic Fleet that year and five years later joined the fleet that destroyed the Spanish Fleet in the Caribbean. This proud cruiser later served on the Atlantic Coast during WW I and decommissioned on Aug 21,1919. (see the web pages for details of her design, construction, battles and post-war service history)

Cover prepared on an un-gummed archive-quality envelope and franked with 32 cent USS Maine stamp # 3192, and varoius 73 cent flag coil stamps #5875-78 (FDOI).
