Rebozo | Traditional Mexican Women's Shawl
Unlike the estola, which is a shawl used in commemorative events within Mexican culture, the rebozo is a traditional garment used by women with a variety of different uses. Imported and manufactured from Southern México, the shawl has seen use since the early days of Mesoamerica, and were later adopted for religious purposes with arrival of the Spaniards. The shawl we offer is made of 100% cotton, and some of its many uses (both in the past and the present in indigenous communities) are:
- Protection from the sun.
- Provide warmth during the cold seasons.
- An accessory to go along with an outfit of choice.
- A cradle for carrying young children.
The shawl itself began to see widespread use in Mexican culture during the era of modernisation; one prominent figure who enjoyed wearing them being renowned Mexican-German artist Frida Kahlo. It continues to be a popular fashion accessory, with first lady Margarita Zavala having also used these in more current times.
