America's Appalachian Trail covering 2,200 miles was designated a recreational

hiking trail and in 1968 the NPS was given the task of managing the various government

and private sites along this system. The trail follows the ridge line thru 14 states from

Georgia to Maine thru forested and or wild lands, although portions traverse towns,

roads and farms. A 2015 Robert Redford, Nick Nolte movie "A Walk in the Woods"

has popularized the trail's hiking challenge.
