Petropavlovsk, where Bering's ship was built, painted by John Webber, 1788, for "Cook's Voyages." Courtesy University of Washington Library. -- From a painting by John Webber, 1788 in Cook's Voyages: Serbina general scenes. -- Two years later Mikhail Gvozdef, a surveyor, reached the islands of which the Chukchis spoke, the Diomede group and from there plainly saw the "Large Country." Gvozdef laid a course for Norton Sound, but finding the water extremely shallow far out at sea, spent five days coasting along trying to approach or circle what he supposed was a large island. On the distant shore he saw persons, houses and groves of spruce and larch trees. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo Is dated 1955.
