The Type 5 Fighter was a type that was hastily converted to an air-cooled radial engine, the Ha-112, in response to the increase in headless Hien due to delays in the production of the Ha-104 liquid-cooled engine.
In order to mount a radial engine larger than the fuselage width on an aircraft originally designed to be equipped with a liquid-cooled engine,
Takeo Doi and the other Kawasaki design team worked hard and accomplished this modification in an extremely short time.
As a result, although the maximum speed was slightly lower than the Hien due to the increased frontal area,
the removal of the cooling system improved the climbing performance,
and the overall balance was also greatly improved,
so the fighting performance and takeoff and landing characteristics were greatly improved,
making it possible to engage in air combat on an equal footing with the F-6F Hellcat and P-51D Mustang.
The Type 5 Fighter, which made its first flight in February 1945, was seen as a hope for the homeland air defense war, and efforts were immediately made to mass-produce it. It was deployed primarily to the 244th, 5th, and 59th Squadrons, and played an active role in the homeland air defense war, but due to damage to factories caused by air raids, only about 390 aircraft were produced, and it was defeated without becoming a major fighting force.
