Antique 1920s Electric Steel Klaxon 12A Horn with Motor for Early Automobiles Buick/Oldsmobile/Chevrolet

Klaxon horns, originally a brand name, became a type of electromechanical horn that produced a distinct sound and could be found on automobiles, trains, and ships. Many languages now use the term to refer to any vehicle horn. According to Innovate Us, “The klaxon horn's characteristic sound is produced by a spring-steel diaphragm with a rivet in the center that is repeatedly struck by the teeth of a rotating cogwheel. The diaphragm is attached to a horn that acts as an acoustic transformer and controls the direction of the sound.” They could be operated by hand, by batteries, with compressed air, or with an electric motor, transcending language barriers to communicate an emergency.

They were invented and patented in 1908 by American Miller Reese Hutchinson, who coined the term “klaxon” from the Greek word klazo, meaning ‘to shriek’ and founded the Klaxon Company. He later sold the rights to the Lovell-McConnel Manufacturing Company of Newark, NJ, and would go on to become Chief Engineer of Thomas Edison. Founder of Lovell-McConnel Franklyn Hallett Lovell Jr. revolutionized their use. They became standard equipment on General Motors automobiles and were used as military evacuation alarms, factory sirens, and even submarine dive alarms. Klaxon horns have now been largely replaced by electronic horns and alarms, but they rarely reproduce the iconic Klaxon “arooga.”
