The reverse depicts the Sanctuary of Zeus Strateos sited in the mountains above Amasia, birthplace of the Greco-Roman historian Strabo and ancient seat of the Pontic kings. In his book on the Mithridatic Wars, the Roman historian Appian writes of dedications offered to Zeus Stratios by Mithridates IV after his victory over Lucius Licinius Murena in the Second Mithridatic War (83-81 BCE):
"[Mithridates] drove all of Murena's garrisons from Cappadocia and offered sacrifice to Zeus Stratios on a lofty pile of wood on a high hill, according to the fashion of his country... The height of the flame is such that it can be seen at a distance of 1000 stades from the sea" (Appian, Mithridatic Wars, 9.66)
